Can Dogs Eat Bananas?

When it comes to fruits and vegetables, it can be difficult for us dog owners to remember what they can share with their doggy best friends and which ones could prove fatal. So, where do bananas come into this? Can dogs eat bananas? Yes, they sure can!

Are Bananas Good for Dogs?

Bananas are high in potassium, vitamin B6, and vitamin C, high in fibre (this can help if your dog is having gastrointestinal problems), and magnesium, (this promotes bone growth and helps the body produce protein and its ability to absorb vitamins). Sometimes vets will recommend bananas as a great natural, healthy alternative to fatty, salty treats. However, as with any food item, you should only feed your dog bananas in moderation, this is mainly because they contain a lot of natural sugars.

Can Dogs Eat Banana Peels?

We recommend you be cautious of banana peels. Although the peels are not toxic to dogs, they are difficult for your dog to digest and may cause a blockage. Even without the peel, feeding your dog too many bananas can cause an upset stomach. If you have any questions or concerns about how much you can safely feed your dog, consult your veterinarian or a pet nutritionist.

How to Feed Your Dog Banana

In addition to giving your dog a slice of a regular banana, here are some other ways they can enjoy the tasty snack:

  • Mix it into a little dog-safe peanut butter.
  • Stuff it into a Kong and freeze it along with other fruits or vegetables.
  • Spread it on a lick mat
